A Buyer's Guide to Wooden Flooring

What to get right before you buy, and the mistakes we help our clients avoid.

Buy the Wear Rating for the Room

AC3 for bedrooms, AC4 or AC5 for living rooms and passages. Underspecifying here is what makes a floor look tired in three years instead of ten.

Check the Subfloor Is Level and Dry

Click lock flooring floats on the subfloor. Any dip or rise telegraphs through and stresses the joints. Level it first, and lay a moisture barrier over concrete.

Leave the Expansion Gap

Flooring expands and contracts with humidity. It needs a gap at every wall, hidden by beading. Floors laid tight to the wall buckle in the first wet season.

SPC Where Water Will Reach

Kitchens, utility areas and ground floors with damp risk should be SPC vinyl rather than laminate. It costs a little more and will not swell.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the questions we hear most about wooden flooring.

Can wooden flooring be laid over existing tiles?

Yes, that is the usual approach. The tiles need to be sound and reasonably level. Click lock planks float over them with underlay in between, so there is no demolition.

How much does the floor level rise?

About 10 to 14 mm for laminate with underlay. Check door bottoms, because they often need trimming by that amount.

Is laminate flooring waterproof?

Water resistant, not waterproof. It handles spills wiped up promptly. For standing water, use SPC vinyl instead.

What is the difference between laminate and engineered wood?

Laminate has a printed decor layer under a wear coat. Engineered wood has a real timber top layer over a stable core, so it looks and feels like wood and can sometimes be sanded once.

How long does installation take?

A typical bedroom is done in a day. A full flat usually takes two to three days including beading, assuming the subfloor needs no major levelling.

Does it work with termites and Bengaluru humidity?

Laminate and SPC have no natural timber for termites to attack. Humidity is handled by leaving the correct expansion gap and using a moisture barrier over concrete.
